MCC Track Looks For Great Showing At UAB
From School Reports
MCC will return to the track Saturday at the Green and Gold
Invitational hosted by UAB at the CrossPlex in Birmingham.
MCC will look to continue to build on the success they had
last weekend at the Auburn Invitational.
This week MCC will travel their full squad, with the
distance runners and throwers making their season debut.
“This week will be a little different then last week with us
final traveling our whole squad,” said Head Coach Chip Gayden. “This is a
good meet for our throwers and distance runners to compete at a very high level
and open up their indoor season with some good competition.”
MCC will once again bring their talented sprint and jumps
group back the CrossPlex, where they have seen a great deal of success.
Freshman, Chris Lewis will once again take the track in the
60 meters and the 200 meters. Lewis is looking to make it to three consecutive
60 meter finals in his first three collegiate meets and improve upon his time
of 6.74 which ranks him first in the NJCAA.
Freshman Cravorkian Carson will also join Lewis in the 60
meters in hopes of getting to his second collegiate final in the 60 meters
after posting a personal best last week of 6.94 at the Auburn Invitational that
ranks him seventeenth in the NJCAA.
The meet will also see several Eagles make their debut in
different events. Freshman, K’lan Harris will make his debut in the 400
meters, along with Freshman Marquis Adams. Freshman, Eric Durham
will make his debut in the 200 meters after running the 400 meters the first
two races of the season and posting the fastest freshman time in the country in
the 400 meters.
MCC will also look to improve upon their 4x400 meter relay
time from last week that currently ranks them eleventh nationally in the NJCAA.
“I really like this meet for our sprinters as it has the
events very spaced out for us to get enough rest,” said Gayden. “I think
you will see our 4x4 relay run really well with Eric not running the open 400
and Devontre just high jumping. I think the time of rest K’lan and Bryson
both get between the open 400 and relay will have them at full strength and
fresh for the relay.”
MCC will also see the debut of their distance runners with
freshmen Cristian Lopez, Josh Austin and Martin Gomez all competing in the 800
meters. It will also see Tyler Warren compete in the mile and Djano
Sedrick in the 3000 meter invite.
On the women’s side it will see three freshmen make their
debut in multiple events. Freshmen Crystal Pettigrew will make her debut
in the long jump. Freshman, Jaylen Cowan will make her debut in both the
200 meter and 400 meter. Freshman, Breonnah Thomas will also make her
debut in the 800 meters as well.
The UAB Green and Gold Invitational begins at 9:00 a.m.
Saturday with the field events as well as the sprint events. You can
