MCC Basketball Sweeps Southwest
From School Reports
The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles entered play
Thursday night against Southwest Mississippi Community College looking to
guarantee a postseason berth next week in the MACJC State Tournament. The Lady
Eagles secured a spot by defeating the Lady Bears by a final score of 79-68 in
front of a huge homecoming crowd at the Graham Gymnasium.
The Lady Eagles concluded the regular season with an 18-5
overall record and a 10-4 mark inside the MACJC South Division race. The
standings in the MACJC South Division are now a mystery after the conclusion of
play Thursday night. MCC, Jones, and Pearl River each finished the regular
season with a 10-4 league record, while Co-Lin ended the season with a 9-5
mark. The standings are very unclear as of Thursday night due to several tie
breakers that must be determined among the final four teams at the top of the
standings. The women’s portion of the 2014 MACJC State Tournament will begin
Tuesday in Fulton, MS on the campus of Itawamba Community College. The bracket
for the tournament is still undetermined at this time until the final standings
in the South Division are verified by league officials.
Victoria Stewart led the way for the Lady Eagles in the
homecoming victory with 24 points, while Londyn Thomas ended the game with 17
points. Freshman Miaya Crowder finished with 14 points, while Kristin Sampson
scored 11 points.
The MCC men were able to complete the sweep of Southwest by
a final count of 77-65. Sophomore Corey Brister led the way with 27 points and
Brandon Daniels finished with 17 points. Former Meridian High star William Byrd
finished his MCC career Thursday night with 14 points.
