MCC Baseball Splits Final Day of Rush Invitational Tournament

The Meridian Community College baseball squad concluded play in the 2014 Rush Invitational Tournament at Scaggs Field by splitting its final two games of the weekend. Meridian was able to defeat Jefferson College (MO) in the opening game Sunday morning by a final count of 6-3, but Kaskaskia (IL) defeated the Eagles in the night cap by a final score of 5-3. Jefferson College also defeated Kaskaskia 3-1 in other action on Sunday during the tournament.

MCC moved its record to 3-3 overall for the 2014 regular season and finished the weekend by winning three of the four games in the tournament. Jefferson College is now 2-2 overall after the two-day event, while Kaskaskia finished the weekend with a 1-3 overall record.

MCC will return to action Wednesday afternoon with a road doubleheader at Wallace-Selma beginning at 3 p.m. The Eagles will return to action this Saturday and Sunday for a four-game home stand at Scaggs Field. MCC will welcome Coahoma Community College to town Saturday for a doubleheader and Jones County Junior College Sunday for a pair of games. Both doubleheader sets are set to begin at 1 p.m. for both days.

The Eagles were able to open the day Sunday with an impressive three-run victory over the Vikings. Ben Gann led the charge for MCC in the first game of the day by knocking in three runs for the green and white. Gann finished the game with a double and a single, to go along with two runs scored in the game. Paul Angel, Mac Seibert, and Dalton Thomas each collected RBI base hits in the win for Meridian.

Dustin Smith picked up his first collegiate victory on the mound for Meridian, while Bryant Johnson earned his second save of the weekend. MCC finished the game with eight total hits, while Jefferson College had six team hits.

The Blue Devils were able to leave Meridian with one victory for the weekend by holding off the Eagles in the night cap by a two-run margin. MCC only managed five hits in the game, while Kaskaskia had 12 hits in the contest.

Mac Seibert and Dalton Thomas each had an RBI double in the game for the Eagles. Paul Angel, Benn Gann, and Brooks Balisterri each ended the game with one hit apiece for Meridian.

Former Clarkdale standout Jonathan Porter took the loss on the mound for MCC by working just over innings and collecting five strikeouts.
