MCC Drops Third Straight To Open Season

From School Reports

The Meridian Community College Eagles dropped its third straight game to open the 2012 season to Gulf Coast (Fla.) on Sunday night by a final score of 11-5. The Eagles finished play in the 2012 First Pitch Classic in Panama City, FL and will return to action this Wednesday at Scaggs Field against Bossier Parrish. The doubleheader against the Cavaliers is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.

"As soon as this team gets out of its own way and eliminate mistakes then it has a great opportunity to have a great season," said MCC head coach Chris Curry. "We would much rather hit adversity at this point in the season rather than the end of the year. We are looking forward to getting back home on Wednesday to play in front of our home fans."

Wade Wass led the Eagles at the plate with two hits, including a three-run home run. Wass also added a one-run triple in the loss for MCC. Mike Williams collected his first RBI of his college career with a sacrifice fly. Tanner Vandevere and Samuel Peterson each added a hit in the loss for the Eagles.

Dylan Brown led Gulf Coast by driving in a pair of runs on a triple and Grant Alvarez added a two-run single in the victory for the Commodores. Michael Manley took the pitching loss on the mound for Meridian by working into the third inning, and allowing six runs (one earned).
Andrew Chesteen was the bright spot out of the bullpen for the Eagles by working three scoreless innings in relief.
