Wallace-Hanceville Sweeps MCC

The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles were looking to extend its current winning streak to three games on Sunday afternoon, but the Wallace-Hanceville Lady Lions had other ideas. Wallace-Hanceville outscored MCC 14-2 in the final three minutes to take an 83-71 victory over the Lady Eagles on the second day of the 2012 Rush Extravaganza Basketball Classic at Graham Gymnasium.

Meridian (7-9) led 43-33 at the end of the first half, but the Lady Lions opened the second half on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 43-43 with 17:57 left in the game. The two teams exchanged the lead for much of the second half, but Wallace-Hanceville would take control of the game in final three minutes to secure the road victory over Meridian.

Wallace-Hanceville (11-6) finished the game on a 14-2 run and left Meridian with the road victory over the Lady Eagles.

MCC was led by Chasity Kearney with 35 points and TaCouya Allen led the way for Wallace-Hanceville with 23 points. Haley Stewart scored 18 points in the win for the Lady Lions and all of her points came on three-point shots. The Lady Eagles return to action Thursday night on the road at Jones County Junior College beginning at 6 p.m.

The final day of the 2012 Rush Extravaganza Basketball Classic begins at noon on Monday with Koscuisko Christian taking on Laurel Home School. The second game of the day begins at 3 p.m. with a girl’s matchup featuring New Hope and Neshoba Central. The boys of New Hope will follow with a game at 4:30 p.m. against Southeast Lauderdale, and the final game of the Classic will feature the Lady Wildcats of Meridian High taking on Provine at 6 p.m.

The Eagles had an opportunity to force overtime on the final shot of the game by Kaylim Noel, but MCC would fall short. The final shot by Noel rattled in the goal and out as Wallace-Hanceville escaped with a three-point victory over the Eagles to earn the sweep. The two teams exchanged the lead for most of the second half, but the Lions were able to score several late baskets to take the victory.

Noel ended the game with 12 points and Trent Tucker led the Eagles in scoring with 15 points. Jamalcolm Griffin led the way in scoring for Wallace-Hanceville with 21 points and Jeremy McKay added 20 points in the win for the Lions.

MCC dropped its overall record to 4-11 with the loss and Wallace-Hanceville improved to 13-6 with the victory. The Eagles return to action Thursday night on the road at Jones County Junior College beginning at 8 p.m.
