Jones Sweeps Past MCC

The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats came to Graham Gymnasium Thursday night and had their way with the Meridian Community College Lady Eagles. Alecia Autman led the Lady Bobcats with 24 points and 10 rebounds to propel JCJC to an 84-72 victory over MCC. Jones improved to 6-2 with the road victory and Meridian dropped to 4-4 for the season.

Jones took its largest lead of the first half behind the solid shooting from Alecia Autman to make the score 28-17 with 9:22 left in the half. The Lady Eagles responded with a furious scoring run to tie the game at 29-29 with 5:32 left in the first half. The scoring was led by a pair of baskets in the paint by Chasity Kearney and a couple of long range shots by Gelese Lampton.

Jones was able to take a 39-34 lead at the end of the first half behind a pair of three-point baskets by Lauren Douglas. The Lady Bobcats were led by Autman with 14 points at the end of the first half and Lampton led MCC with 12 points at the break. JCJC was able to hold former Northeast Lauderdale standout Norianna Haynes to no points after one half.

The Lady Bobcats came out of the locker room and continued its great shooting and built its biggest lead of the game by a score of 55-39. Jones forced four Meridian turnovers and produced points on each trip down the floor to take the 16-point lead with 15:40 left in the game.

The Lady Eagles started a slow comeback and cut the Jones lead to 61-52 with 8:14 left in the game. Kearney led the charge with two more baskets and CalNitra White provided some spark off the bench with four points. The Lady Eagles continued to trim the lead and made the score 62-56 with 6:27 left in the game. Haynes scored her first basket of the game and Lampton added to her impressive total with an easy basket to bring MCC to within six points.

The Lady Bobcats fought off the late charge by Meridian and ran away with the 84-72 win. Lauren Douglas added 21 points for the Lady Bobcats and Kearney led the way with 23 points for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles will return to action Saturday on the road at Coahoma Community College. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. tip-off.

The Bobcats used a big scoring night from Kelvin Nixon and solid rebounding to take the 21-point win over the Eagles. Jones improved to 5-4 with the victory and MCC dropped to 2-7 with the home loss.

The Bobcats led Meridian 47-36 at the end of the first half and JCJC was led by Nixon with 12 points at the break. The Eagles struggled in the first half of action by missing 13 shots from the free throw line and Kevin Williams led MCC with eight points after one half.

JCJC built several large leads in the second half and cruised to the 97-76 road win. Nixon led the Bobcats in scoring with 25 points and Courtney Mack added 15 points for JCJC. Kaylim Noel led Meridian with 15 points and Williams ended the game with 13points.

Meridian will return to action on Saturday on the road at Coahoma Community College. The game is slated for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
