Ex-MCC star lifts State past Ole Miss

Former Meridian Community College standout Tyler Moore drove in the winning run and Mississippi State beat Ole Miss 6-5 Tuesday night to give the Bulldogs the Governor’s Cup trophy.

Moore’s double to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning scored the winning run at Trustmark Park in Jackson and gave MSU a 15-14 advantage in the nonconfrence Governor’s Cup Series versus the Rebels.

Last season at MCC, Moore was named the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) NJCAA Baseball Player of the Year.

He ranked in the top 10 in the NJCAA in batting average, home runs and RBIs. He ranked fourth in the nation with a .472 regular season batting average and His 19 home runs ranked first, which also set a new Meridian school record.

A 33rd round selection of the Washington Nationals in 2006, Moore led MCC in almost every offensive category his sophomore season: home runs (19) - school record, doubles (22), RBIs (62), Runs (48), on base percentage (.535) - school record, and slugging percentage (.927).

Moore's play helped lead the Eagles to a 41-15 overall record and a MACJC Central Division championship.

Moore became the second MCC baseball player in the past four years to be named the NJCAA Division II Baseball Player of the Year. In 2005, MCC’s Michael Murray was named both the NJCAA Div II Athlete of the Year and Baseball Player of the Year.
