MCC Baseball Sweeps Past Shelton State

The Meridian Community College baseball team returned to
action on Wednesday with a road doubleheader in Tuscaloosa, AL against Shelton
State Community College. The Eagles stayed red hot with a doubleheader sweep
over the Buccaneers by final scores of 5-0 and 13-7.
MCC has now won eight straight games and improved its
overall record to 13-1 for the 2016 season with the sweep. MCC will return to
action on March 7 with a road doubleheader against Alabama Southern Community
College. The games are scheduled to be played in Birmingham, AL on the campus
of UAB beginning at noon.
MCC got a solid pitching performance from sophomore Kyle
Bayles in Game One to defeat Shelton State by a final score of 5-0. Bayles
pitched a complete game shutout, allowed only two hits, and notched seven
strikeouts.
Baylor Obert led the way at the plate in Game One for MCC
with a pair of hits, while freshman catcher Blake Fields added an RBI double.
Eason Weeks also chipped in with a double and a run scored in the Game One
victory.
MCC needed all the offense it could muster in Game Two to
defeat Shelton State by a final count of 13-7. Matt Berler finished Game Two
with three singles and two runs scored, while Eason Weeks smashed a three-run
homer in the winning effort. JD Gann had an RBI triple in the victory, while Baylor
Obert and Trace Hamby each collected one double apiece. Sophomore shortstop
Jaylon Keys finished the game with a pair of base hits and one stolen base.
Sophomore Hunter Mullis picked up the pitching win in
Game Two by working five innings and collecting six strikeouts. Spencer Price
picked up the save out of the bullpen and notched three strikeouts.
