MCC Tennis Sweeps Past Marion Military

Meridian Community College traveled to Marion Military
Institute for a match on Monday and came away with great results. MCC’s
men knocked off the number 13 ranked team in the nation by a score of 6-3
In men’s double’s action, Jason Pimenta/Breno Goncalves hit
pay dirt first with a win over Harry Foster/Andrew Wright 8-5. Walt
Harrington/Sam Butler picked up a win at two doubles over Adam Blahney/Max
Holloway - 9-7. The duo was down 5-2 but fought back for the win. Nathan
Hollis/John Taylor Champion lost a close match at three doubles 8-6 against
Xavier Bell/Blake McDonald. Going into the singles matches, Meridian led
2-1. Breno Goncalves hit pay dirt first in the singles with a big win
over Harry Foster 6-3, 7-6(4).
Jason Pimenta picked up the win over Adam Blahney 6-2,
6-2. At three singles, Noah James fought hard but came up on the short
end 7-6(5), 6-3. Samuel Butler. A little flat after the comeback doubles
match, could not get anything going at four singles; he lost to Xavier Bell
6-2, 6-4. Walt Harrington clinched the win for the men at number six
singles over Max Holloway in a tough three-setter. After falling to
Holloway the first set, Walt changed his strategy and took the win 3-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Will Irvin, who was on the court at the same time as Harrington took the first
set from Ben Lee 6-4. Lee won the second 6-4. With pressure off as
Harrington sealed the win, Irvin played a great tiebreak set to win 6-4, 4-6,
10-5. The men are now 3-0 on the season.
Meridian’s women picked up their second win of the season
with a 7-2 win over Marion. The women won all three doubles courts:
Paige Gibson/Shelby Zachry defeated Alex Kempf/Victoria Johnson 8-5; Jordyn
Hull/Alden Hartley defeated Stella Fedela/Kaitlyn Lewis 8-4. The three
duo of Jami Daugherty/Taylor Miller won 8-0 over Brittany Everson/Jamekia
Whitehead. In single’s play, Meridian took wins on courts 3-6 with Kyra
Holway at three, Jordyn Hull at four, Hayden Hill at five and Brittany Allen at
six. Meridian’s Paige Gibson lost to Stella Fedele 6-1, 6-0 on court
1. At the two flight, Shelby Zachry fell to Alex Kempf 6-1, 7-6
(5).
Both teams take a break this week; they will return to
action February 16 against Faulkner State at 1:00 p.m. On February 19,
MCC plays host to Holmes CC at Northeast at 1:00 p.m. followed by a match on
Saturday at East Central at 9:00 a.m. Meridian’s women then host Central
Alabama CC at 1:00 p.m. at Meridian.
