MCC Tennis Takes Win Over Oxford Emory

The Meridian Community College men’s tennis team took a
match 6-3 over Oxford Emory today at Northeast Tennis Center in Meridian, MS
with less than great circumstances. Meridian got off to a slow start with
the temperature hovering around 40 degrees, but once warmed up, they went on a
roll to win a 2-1 decision in doubles. Meridian’s Jason Pimenat/Breno
Gonsalves defeated Peter Higgins/Shams Sohari 8-5. At number two doubles, Sam
Butler/Walt Harrington defeated Michael Pioso/Adib Zaida 8-3. Meridian lost a
close match at number three singles with John Taylor Champion/Nathan Hollis
falling to Cullin McDonough/ (Jackson, MS native) Raghuvan 8-6.
In single’s action, Breno Goncalves at number two was off
the court quickly. He took a 4-0 lead before Adib Zaida forfeited the
match. At number one singles, Jason Pimenta cruised past Peter Higgins
6-2, 6-1. At four singles, Sam Butler lost in a valiant effort to Cullin
McDonough 7-6(2), 6-1. Will Irvin of MCC fell to Shams Sohari 7-5,
7-5. Walt Harrington clinched the match when he pulled out his singles
match at flight 6 with a win over Andrew Chow 6-0, 6-4, 6-1. Noah James won his
match at three singles to add a little icing on the cake. James had a slow
start at three singles losing the first set 6-3, came back to win the second
set 7-5 to force a tiebreak set. James took the tiebreak 10-6 to defeat
Michael Pioso.
Meridian is 2-0 overall on the young season and 1-0 in
conference play. Meridian men and women will return to action Monday when they
travel to Marion Military Institute for a 12:30 p.m. match. Meridian’s women
are 1-0 in conference and overall after defeating ECCC on Friday 8-1.
