MCC Track Places 2nd at South Alabama Invitational

Birmingham, AL - MCC returned to the track Sunday at the Birmingham Crossplex for the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational.

MCC's men's squad posted a second place finish in the meet. One that featured over ten NCAA teams.

"Today was a good day for us as a team," said Head Coach Chip Gayden.  "I think we came out and really showed a lot of improvement and that is nice to see, headed in to the championship portion of the season." 

The men were led by their performance in the 200 meters. MCC was able to post a two, four, six performance in the event. Kendrick Smith posted a second place time of 21.42 while Devarius Turner ran 21.52 and Terrance Johnson finished 6th in 21.84. All three men qualified for the NJCAA Championships next month.

MCC didn't disappoint in the 60 meters either with a two, four finish from Chris Lewis and Cravorkian Carson. Lewis posted a time of 6.73 and Carson posted a 6.78.

In the 400 meters MCC went two, three, four in the event. Dontarian Evans qualified for the NJCAA Championships with a time of 48.60. Bryson Penton finished third in 49.58 and Marquis Adams finished 4th in 49.91.

In the distance events, MCC saw huge success in the 800 meters with Tim Hoodlebrink and Josh Austin both qualifying in 1:55.88 and 1:56.46.

In the Mile and 5,000m, Rogelio Araiza saw a great deal of success running 4:29.51 in the mile and then qualifying for the NJCAA National Championship in the 5,000m with a time of 15:56.56.

Devontre Young finished first in the high jump with a height of 2.06 meters (6'9). Young missed three attempts at 2.13 meters after already solidifying the win.

On the women's side, the day was led by Ashley Henderson as she posted a  second place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 24.45. Henderson also posted a third place finish in the 60 meters with a time of 7.61.

Jocindra Glee posted a 22nd place finish in the 400m with a time of 59.86.

Next up for MCC is the Samford Invitational next Friday and Saturday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
