MCC Tennis Opens National Tournament

The NJCAA Women's National Division I Tennis Tournament hosted by
Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas began play today with thirty-one teams
competing. At the end of Day 1 of
tournament play, Meridian Community College women's tennis is tied for second
place with twelve points with ASA (New York); North Central Texas; Mesa
(Arizona); ABAC (Georgia); and Temple College (Texas).Collin County (Texas) is
in first place with sixteen points. Jones County has eight, Itawamba -4, and
Gulf Coast -2. Of course, ASA and Tyler,
tournament favorites, were top seeds and drew byes in several flights today.
At number one
singles MCC's Mallory Davis, defeated April Kutz, Illinois Valley CC, 6-2,
6-0. At number two singles, Jennifer
Smith, MCC, lost to Snead State's Rachel Farmer in three sets-4-6. 6-2. 6-3.
Madison Gillette, MCC's three flight, defeated Moraine
Valley's
(Illinois) Alexa Armon 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Caroline Terry, MCC's four flight,
defeated Jacksonville College's (Texas) Carolina Hernandez 6-1, 6-1. Molly Davis, MCC's fifth flight player, lost
in three sets to Pima's (Arizona) Cassidy McWhorter 6-7, 7-6, 6-1. MCC's Taylor White lost to Snead State's
Courtney Moore at number six singles= 6-1, 6-4.
All three of Meridian's doubles team advanced to the Round of 16 to be
played on Monday. At number one doubles,
Jennifer Smith/Mallory Davis defeated Oxford College of Emory's Idhal/Lusher
6-2, 6-0. The two team of Madison
Gillette/Molly Davis defeated Elgin CC (Illinois) 6-2, 6-0; the three doubles
Caroline Terry/Taylor White, in what was MCC's best match of the day, defeated
Mesa CC (Arizona) in three sets.
Mesa won the first
set 6-2. Down 5-2 in the second, Terry
and White regrouped and pulled off the second set 7-5. They cruised through the third set 6-0.
