MCC Basketball Sends Four Players to Next Level
From School Reports
The Meridian Community College women’s basketball team held
a special signing ceremony Tuesday afternoon in the Castell Gallery on campus
to recognize three young women who signed scholarships to continue their
college careers. Victoria Stewart (Henderson State), Kristin Sampson
(Mississippi College), and Felshia Walters (Mississippi Valley State) each
signed their national letters of intent in front of many supporters. The three
young women each played a pivotal role in the success of the Lady Eagles during
the 2013-2014 season that finished 19-7 overall.
“We are extremely proud of these young ladies and for
signing today,” said MCC head coach Jocelyn McGilberry. “We appreciate all of
their hard work and dedication to the program here and Meridian Community
College and we know that they will each be very successful in the future.”
Stewart, a former Neshoba Central star, inked her
scholarship with Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, AR. Stewart
averaged nearly 15 points per contest and shot 34 percent from three-point
range. Stewart also distributed the play well during her sophomore season by
leading the squad with four assists per contest. Stewart will look to bolster a
Henderson State lineup that finished the 2013-2014 season with a 13-14 record.
The Reddies compete in the Great American Conference and were originally
members of the Gulf South Conference until recently.
Sampson, a former Jackson Provine product, signed her
national letter of intent to play next season at Mississippi College. Sampson
was the top scorer for the Lady Eagles this past season by averaging 19 points
per game and she also led the team in steals by averaging three per game.
Sampson also shot 54 percent from the floor and shot the ball outside
three-point range at 28 percent. Sampson will look to add some depth to the
lineup for the Lady Choctaws that completed the 2013-2014 season with a 11-14
record. Mississippi College will also be making the jump to the Gulf South
Conference beginning next season.
Walters was the final signee represented in the class
Tuesday afternoon and she signed with Mississippi Valley State. Walters was one
of the leaders in the rebounding category during the 2013-2014 season by
pulling down six boards a game. Walters also averaged seven points a game and
will look to help a Mississippi Valley squad that finished 9-21 this past
season.
