MCC Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader At Faulkner State

The Meridian Community College Eagles rebounded on Wednesday and took an impressive doubleheader sweep (11-1, 10-2) over Faulkner State Community College in baseball action. The Sun Chiefs defeated the Eagles earlier in the season by a final of 6-3 during the Rush Invitational at Scaggs Field. The Eagles improved to 13-10 with the sweep over Faulkner State. MCC will return to action Friday to open a three-game series against Pensacola State College at Scaggs Field. The series will begin Friday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and the final game of the series is scheduled for Saturday at noon.

The Eagles got a huge day at the plate in the opening game of the doubleheader from Johnny Tolson and Wade Wass to earn the run rule victory. Tolson finished the game with a pair of doubles and Wass ended the game with a pair of hits, including a double for the Eagles. Samuel Peterson (1-1) earned the pitching victory for the Eagles by working four innings and collecting four strikeouts. Former Lamar standout Witt Haggard worked the final inning in relief on the mound for MCC and gave up no runs.

Faulkner State 2
Meridian preserved the sweep over the Sun Chiefs in the second game and got a solid pitching performance. Nick Helmstetter (1-0) earned the pitching win for the Eagles and allowed one run, while collecting one strikeout. Austin Greer worked three innings out of the bullpen and Blake Barrow pitched in the final inning for the Eagles. Wass led the way in the second game with a solo home run and Charles Morton had great performance at the plate with two doubles. Gabe Woods also had three hits in the sweep over Faulkner State.
