MCC Baseball Splits Pair With NW Florida

The Meridian Community College Eagles closed out its weekend set with Northwest Florida by splitting a pair of games with the Raiders on Saturday. MCC won the opening game over the Raiders by a final score of 4-2 and dropped the second game on Saturday by a final of 6-5 in 13 innings. MCC moved its overall record for the season to 11-9 and will return to action Sunday against Ellsworth Community College.

The Eagles closed out its suspended game with the Raiders from Friday by taking the two-run decision. MCC led NW Florida 3-2 on Friday and the game was suspended due to heavy rain and concluded on Saturday afternoon. Brandon Smith picked up the pitching win in the game by working 5 2/3 innings in relief to earn his first win of the season. Gabe Woods led MCC at the plate with an RBI single in the fifth inning and Johnny Tolson added an RBI single in the victory.

The Raiders scored a run on a balk by MCC in the thirteenth inning to escape with a one-run victory in the second game of the day. MCC tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double by Tolson, but the Raiders were able to slide past the Eagles. Josh Lee (1-1) took the pitching loss for the Eagles and worked 4 1/3 innings in relief of Andrew Chesteen who worked into the ninth inning.
