Lady Eagles fall to Jones County 87-85

(MERIDIAN) - The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles entered Monday night’s contest with in-state rival Jones County Junior College looking for their third consecutive win.

MCC looked to be in control most of the game as the Lady Eagles had a double-digit lead at half, 47-37 over Jones County.

However the visiting Lady Bobcats kept chipping away at MCC’s lead and with less than :90 seconds to play finally tied up the ballgame at 83-83.

MCC and Jones traded the lead until the Lady Bobcats made a basket with :16.8 left in the game which gave Jones County a two point lead, 87-85.

After a time out called by MCC head coach Hilary Allen, MCC’s Norianna Haynes passed the ball to Arnissa Galloway underneath the basket. Galloway missed her first attempt, gathered the rebound and missed again as the clock expired and left MCC two points shy of Jones County, 87-85.

Sophomore Tanecka Carney, for Jones County, led all scorers with 34 points. Carney also collected 8 rebounds, and had 3 steals.

For Meridian, former Northeast Lauderdale standout, Norianna Haynes led the way with 30 points. Haynes also had 4rebounds on the night. Fellow freshman, Chasity Kearney had 25 points and 11 rebounds for the game’s only double-double.

Jones County improved to 4-2 and will host East Mississippi Monday in Ellisville.

With the loss, MCC falls to 4-3 and will be in action again on Friday and Saturday in Atlanta at the Georgia Perimeter College Tournament.
