MCC Golf heads to Arizona for start of spring season

(CASA GRANDE, AZ)-­ The Meridian Community College golf team will begin play in the 2008 spring season at the Arizona Intercollegiate Monday and Tuesday at the Francisco Grande Golf Course in Phoenix, AZ.

This trip will mark the third time that Eagles have appeared in Arizona; the previous trips were for the NJCAA national championship at Palm Valley GC.

"This is a great event with a lot of great programs represented," said MCC head coach Sean Covich. "Our guys are excited to represent Meridian and the State of Mississippi during this tournament.”

The Eagles will join nearly 20 other teams in the tournament including the nations No 1 team in the NAIA poll- Oklahoma Christian University. The field includes other top teams from around the country as Berry University and California Baptist University will also participate.

“This will be a great opportunity for our guys to get exposure to some four year university programs,” said Covich.

Sophomore team captain and recent Southern Wesleyan University signee, Joshua Ivy, will sit out this event due to an injury to his left wrist. 2007 MACJC Second Team All State member Bryant Self will be the lone returning sophomore to participate for MCC. Self will be joined by a trio of freshmen including former Lamar standout golfers, Clay Bounds and Jarrod Moulds. Fellow freshman, Joe Konieczny will round out the starting line-up for MCC.

MCC will tee off at 8:00 a.m. MT Monday at the 7,545 -yard, par-72 Francisco Grande Golf Course. The 54-hole event will be in the shotgun start format, with the teams playing 36 holes on day one and 18 holes on day two.
