04/13/2007

MERIDIAN , Miss. – Meridian Community College tennis head coach Wanda McPhail has announced the signing of Katy Shoptaugh to the MCC Lady Eagles tennis program.

"We are really excited to have Katy join us this upcoming season," said McPhail. “She comes in with plenty of experience and comes from a great tennis family."

Shoptaugh comes to MCC by way of Baton Rouge, La., set to graduate this May from Redemptorist High School. While a member of the tennis squad in high school, she also ran on the RHS cross country team.

Shoptaugh had an outstanding junior season in high school in which she was named All Metro for the Baton Rouge area in girl’s singles and was named the MVP of her high school tennis team. In 2006 she was Regional Runner-up at the 3-A Regional Tournament in girl’s singles and was a State Quarterfinalist in the 3-A State Tournament in girl’s singles.

In 2005 she was a State Qualifier and was named Most Improved for her cross country team.

Shoptuaugh has attended the LSU Tiger Tennis Camp, Steve Carter Lion Tennis Camp and the YMCA Total Tennis Camps for the past five seasons. She comes from a tradition-rich tennis family. Her uncle was an All American for LSU while currently her cousin is a standout on the tennis team for Centenary College.

She is the daughter of David and Beth Shoptaugh. She plans to pursue a degree in dental hygiene.
