MCC Baseball Stays Hot With Sweep of Coahoma

CLARKSDALE, MS - The 20th ranked Meridian Community
College Eagles closed out its current six-game road trip by traveling to
Coahoma Community College on Wednesday afternoon for an MACJC doubleheader with
the Tigers. MCC came away with a hard fought sweep of Coahoma by winning 10-7
and 3-2 to secure the sweep. The two victories also closed out a perfect road
trip for the Eagles by going 6-0.
MCC has also won 12 of its last 14 conference games and
are still in the hunt for the MACJC regular season title with four game
remaining on the schedule. The Eagles improved to 30-11 overall for the 2015
season and 18-6 in conference action with the sweep of the Tigers.
The Eagles will return to action this Saturday afternoon
for its final two regular season home games of the 2015 season by hosting
Northwest Mississippi Community College at Scaggs Field. The first pitch of
Game One on Saturday with the Rangers is scheduled for 2 p.m.
MCC had to fight back throughout much of Game One to
escape with a 10-7 victory over the Tigers to begin the day on Wednesday. The
Eagles trailed 7-6 going to the top of the ninth inning and scored four times
to secure the three-run comeback victory over the Tigers. MCC also finished
Game One by banging out 16 hits as a team.
Kyle Bayles gave MCC the lead for good in the ninth
inning with a two-run triple off the wall in center field to make the score 8-7
in favor of the Eagles. Dalton Thomas and Goose Yates each followed with an RBI
single apiece to account for the remaining runs in the final frame for MCC.
Bryant Johnston (6-1) picked up the pitching win in Game
One for MCC in relief by working two innings and collecting one strikeout.
Dustin Smith also added an RBI double in the Game One
win, while Bayles and Thomas each knocked in one run apiece earlier in the
game.
MCC used solid relief pitching and timely hitting in Game
Two to take a 3-2 victory over the Tigers to complete the sweep. Andrew Crook
picked up with the pitching win in relief by working three innings and
collecting three strikeouts. Goose Yates also earned the save by pitching a
perfect ninth inning for MCC.
The Eagles got off to a hot start in Game Two by scoring
two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead over CCC. Dalton
Thomas knocked in the first run of the game on a double and Dustin Smith would
follow moments later with a double of his own to give the road team a two-run
edge. Coahoma would tie the game in the third inning, but MCC would come up
with a big hit from the top of its lineup to secure the victory. Matt Berler
would come up with an RBI single that would propel the Eagles to the 3-2
victory.
