MCC Tennis Player To Be Honored in New York

From School Reports

Meridian Community College sophomore tennis player, Shane Trebisky, was awarded the ITA Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship and Leadership Award at the NJCAA men’s national tennis tournament held in May at Collin County Community College.  The banquet is held in conjunction with the men’s national tournament.  At the ITA Awards portion of the banquet, Shane was selected from four Regional winners as the national winner.  To be eligible for this award, players must be a sophomore and must be nominated by their coaches.  A regional committee then selects a region winner.  A national committee selects the winner from the regional candidates.

The Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship and Leadership Award is the highest honor that a tennis player can receive at the JUCO level.  The male/female awarded this honor is open to the player who in his/her second year, who has been enrolled at his/her school for at least one full year prior to the present school year. The player must exhibit leadership, sportsmanship, scholarship, and athletic success in tennis.

Shane was a tremendous leader for MCC.  He was, according to Coach McPhail, the hardest worker and most determined player that I have coached.  He motivated the team because if he were not in class, he was on the court.  His goal was to play DI tennis after completing the year at MCC.  Shane was the Region XXIII/MACJC single’s champion in 2015.  He had a tremendous effort at the national tournament.  Shane is continuing his education and tennis career at Southern Illinois University.  Academically, Shane finished as an honors graduate.  He was selected an Academic All-American by the NJCAA and an ITA Academic All-American.

As a result of his selection as the national winner, Shane will get a paid trip to an Oracle/ITA Awards Luncheon at the historic West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, New York on Friday, August 28, 2015.  The tennis outing Friday morning will provide the awardees with the opportunity to enjoy the traditions of the West Side Tennis Club, including play on the grass tennis courts.

Winners from each division as well as players selected to the US All Star Team and Arthur Ashe essay winners will be honored at this banquet.  Players will arrive on Thursday for a full two days of activities thanks to Oracle and the ITA.
