Delgado Sweeps Away MCC

The Meridian Community College Eagles entered play Saturday on the road at Delgado looking to stay in control of first place in the Miss-Lou Conference standings, but things didn't go as planned for the green and white.

Delgado cruised past MCC with a doubleheader sweep (0-10, 1-8) Saturday afternoon in New Orleans to snatch away first place from the Eagles. Delgado improved to 29-9 overall for the season and 4-3 in conference play, while MCC moved its record to 20-18 and 3-4 in league play.

The final game of the three-game series will be played Sunday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m.

MCC had no answer for starting pitcher Chase Hymel who nearly tossed a perfect game for the Dolphins. Hymel pitched five shutout innings in the run-rule shortened game and surrendered one hit that came with two outs in the fifth inning.

Kevin Hall managed the only hit in Game One for the Eagles which was a single to break up the perfect game.

Delgado finished Game One with nine hits and put MCC away in the third inning with five runs that gave the Dolphins a 7-0 lead. Delgado scored its first run of the game in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Chris Eades and added a second run in the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Cody Freeman.

Delgado scored the five runs in the following inning and two of the runs crossed the plate on fielding errors by Meridian. Troy Lewis collected an RBI in the inning on a sacrifice fly and Bryce Adams added an RBI single for the Dolphins.

Delgado scored three more runs in the fourth inning to secure the run-rule win. Lewis drove  in a pair of runs on a triple and Adams added an RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Freshman Jake Smith suffered the pitching loss in Game One for MCC by working two innings in the start.

Delgado completed the sweep of Meridian by scoring six late runs to secure an 8-1 win. MCC battled Delgado for most of the contest and only trailed 2-1 going to the bottom of the sixth inning, but things changed in a hurry for the Eagles.

Adams gave Delgado some much needed insurance in the sixth inning with a two-run double and Josh Watkins added a two-run double that proved to be the big hits of the frame.

The only run of the game for MCC came in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout by Garrett Larosa. MCC finished Game Two with five hits, while Delgado had 12 hits.

Dalton Thomas led the way for the Eagles with a pair of hits, including a double. Mac Seibert, Michael Druhan, and Scott Votaw each added a single in the loss.

Former Clarkdale standout Jonathan Porter took the loss on the mound for the Eagles by working four innings and collecting six strikeouts.
