Petit Leads Eagles To 2nd After Round One Of State/Region

04/16/2007

WESSON, Miss – After opening the 2007 MACJC/Region XXIII golf championships with a round of 292, Meridian Community College’s golf team finds themselves just one shot off the lead heading into the final round of competition at the par-72, 6,745-yard Wolf Hollow Golf Club. Mississippi Gulf Coast has the 18-hole clubhouse lead at 3-over par, 291. MCC is in 2nd with a 4-over par 292, while Hinds is in 3rd with 300.

Sophomore Dustin Petit carded MCC’s low round of the day with an opening-round 3-under par 69. The Luling, La-product is the defending MACJC/Region XXIII medalist.

Freshman Jarrod Lemaster added MCC’s second under par round on the day, firing a 2-under par 70. Sophomore Justin Eaves shot a round of 3-over par 75. Freshmen Bryant Self and Joshua Ivy finished up with 78 and 79 respectively.

“At one point it looked like we were going to post something real low, but on the last few holes of the back nine we seemed to throw away shots which hurt our score,” said MCC head coach Sean Covich.

“But I like where we are- just one shot back, the guys are ready to get after it tomorrow.”

Individually, MCC’s Petit is in first place with a 69, while Hind’s Sonny Williams and MCC’s Lemaster are in a tie for 2nd with a 70.

Final round of the 36-hole event will get underway Tuesday morning at 8:00 am.
