MCC Basketball and Tennis Hold Signing Ceremony
From School Reports
The Meridian Community College basketball and tennis team
held a special signing ceremony on Thursday afternoon at the Graham Gymnasium
to announce a special group of sophomores that have signed to continue their
careers at the next level. The MCC basketball team recognized Maia McCullum and
Ken’Darrius Hamilton as its signees, while the MCC tennis recognized Sam Butler
and Sean Grice.
McCullum signed a scholarship with William Carey University
in Hattiesburg, MS on Thursday after playing a very key role on the MCC women’s
basketball team over the past two seasons. McCullum averaged nine points a game
over the past two seasons for the Lady Eagles and also helped the program
finish second last season at the MACJC State Tournament. McCullum also
represented MCC by participating in the annual MACJC North/South All-Star Game.
Hamilton made his choice known by signing a scholarship with
Tennessee State University and should provide a huge presence on the floor next
season. Hamilton was the leading scorer for the Eagles this past season by
averaging 17 points per contest and also pulled down nine rebounds a contest.
Hamilton was also named an All-State selection, All-Region selection, and
played in the annual MACJC North/South All-Star Game.
The MCC tennis team will send two of its players to begin a
new chapter at Blue Mountain College where the Toppers will compete in tennis
for the first time in school history next season. Sam Butler and Sean Grice
both signed with Blue Mountain on Thursday afternoon after playing a big part
in helping the MCC tennis program have another stellar season. Butler and Grice
both helped the MCC men’s tennis team capture the 2016 MACJC/Region 23
Championship and the squad will also play in the NJCAA Men’s National
Tournament that will be held May 16-20 in Plano, Texas.
The MCC tennis program also announced the addition of Rachel
Sollie from West Lauderdale High School who signed with the MCC tennis program
at a recent signing ceremony. Sollie will be joining five returning freshman
from the 2016 MACJC/Region 23 Championship team and will look to provide more
depth next season for the Lady Eagles. Sollie has previously been a state
runner-up in doubles on two different occasions and will be competing for a
State Championship next week for the Lady Knights in Oxford, MS.
