Meridian Community College men’s tennis team opened the 2010 season this weekend with an 8-1 loss to NCAA Division I, University of Memphis.
The only win of the day was at number one singles.
MCC’s Lucio Cangiano defeated Charlie Ramsey 7-6, 3-6, 12-10.
At no. 2 singles Gabriel Nicotra lost to Michael Janz 6-0, 6-1.
At no. 3 singles, Andres Cepede lost in straight sets to Michael Hayes 6-2, 6-3.
At no. 4 singles Jeremy Purdum lost to John Taylor 6-1, 7-5.
At no. 5 singles Wade Henderson lost to Michale Gaerthoeffner 6-0, 6-0.
Kyle Dew, at no. six singles, lost to Jordan Smith 6-2, 6-0.
UM won all three doubles matches.
Cangiano/Cepede lost to Smith/Henry 8-3; Nicotra/Purdum lost to Ramsey and Helfin 8-4, and Henderson/Landry lost to Taylor/Hayes 8-1.
They are currently 0-1 on the season.
In other action this week, MCC men and women defeated Faulkner State 9-0.
Meridian’s Anna Vavrik/Aline Ferreira won 8-0; Savannah Zachry/Jessica Halterman won 8-0 and Munn/Brown won 8-0. In single’s action Zachry defeated Steigerwald 6-0, 6-0; Halterman defeated Drew Copeland 6-0, 6-0; MCC’s Indi Mire defeated Victoria Wilson 6-0, 6-1; Kaley Allen defeated Alex Sanchez 6-0, 6-1; At no. 5 Sumner Brown defeated Brenda Gatts 6-0, 6-0 and Shelley Munn defeated Matchett 6-1, 6-0.
In men’s action MCC’s no. 1 team Cangiano/Cepede won 8-1.
The no. 2 doubles Purdum/Nicotra won 8-0 as did the MCC no. 3 doubles Landry/Henderson.
In singles action Cangiano won 6-1, 6-1, Nicotra won 6-0, 6-0; Cepede won 6-0, 6-0, Purdum won 6-0, 6-0.
Henderson won his match 6-0, 6-0. Landry won 6-0, 6-0. Justin Giles won his match, too.
Meridian men will return to action March 2 at Marion, AL against Marion Military Institute
