MCC sweeps Kishwaukee

from staff reports

The Meridian Community College baseball team overcame five errors in Tuesday's nightcap to sweep visiting Kishwaukee 8-7 and 16-8.

The Eagles, who improved to 16-9 with the wins, jumped on top in the first game with a pair of home runs in the first inning as Brent Tanner followed Jordan King with a round-tripper.

King would score again in the third on a Tyler Vick single and Vick, the former West Lauderdale standout, added a three-run home run in the fifth when MCC tacked on five more runs. Wesley Thigpen also homered in the inning.

Behind the exploits of King, who scored three runs on four hits — a home run, two doubles and a single — and Vick, a home run and triple on three hits, Newton County product Jared Cavenaugh earned the win. The sophomore right-hander allowed three runs – all earned — in six innings before Allen Johnson closed the game out.

The Eagles' offense continued to soar in the nightcap, scoring four runs in the first and tacked on seven more in the sixth. King hammered a two-run home run in the first inning, before Thigpen doubled in two more runs. Vick added a two-run home run in the sixth and King tripled to drive in three.

Jason Judge started for MCC, lasting only four outs before being relieved by Dalton Kulas. Judge, a former Lake star, allowed five runs — all coming in the second. Kulas went 4 2/3 innings before giving way to freshman left-hander Jose Acosta. In his first appearance for MCC, Acosta struck out the side in the seventh.

The Eagles host Kishwaukee in the series finale today.
