(HUNTSVILLE)- Meridian Community College Eagles opened up the NJCAA Division I National Championship with an impressive 1-over par round of 289.

The Eagles had two players shoot under par on Tuesday.

Freshman Brandt Garon and sophomore Cory Williamson each shot 1-under par, 71.

Garon was named a Golf Coaches Association of American All America and to the GCAA's All Freshman team at the national championship banquet Monday night.

2009 All American, Garrett Westbrook, shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday for MCC.

Freshman Clemens Dvorak shot a 3-over par 75 while sophomore Nick Hawkes shot a 5-over 77.

"This is an excellent way to beign this tournament," said MCC head coach Sean Covich.

"A lot of golf left but to see Meridian's name near the top of the leader board in a national championship is always special."

Currently the Eagles sit just three shots off the lead after round one. Defending national champions, McLennan (TX) College leads at 286, MCC is at 289 while three teams are tied in third with 290.

Play continues tomorrow with round two action, MCC begins at 11:10 am.
