MCC Golf Captures Glenlakes Tournament Championship

The Meridian Community College golf team stayed on a winning streak Tuesday by capturing the 2017 Glenlakes Invitational Tournament in Foley, AL. The Eagles won the tournament by 11 strokes ahead of Central Alabama Community College. MCC finished the tournament with a total team score of 901 to win its second straight tournament after winning the Lou Hart Invitational Tournament back on March 7. MCC entered the tournament this week by being ranked sixth in the latest ranking according to golfstat.com and that also makes MCC the highest ranked junior college golf program in the state of Mississippi.

Freshman Jacob Berry led the Eagles as a medalist and finished the tournament with a total three-round score of 217 (1-over par), while Isaiah Jackson finished tied for second place to land a spot on the All-Tournament Team. Jackson ended the three-round event with a total score of 224 (8-over par).

Former Lamar star Lance Strickland finished tied for ninth with a final score of 231 (15-over par) and Malachi Spiers finished in 16th position with a score of 235 (19-over par). Porsche Kitipongpatana rounded out the field for MCC by finishing tied for 23rd with a score of 240 (24-over par).

MCC will return to action for its final conference tournament of the spring season on April 1-2 by participating in the MACJC Event #6 at Lions Golf Course in Columbus, MS.

MCC Softball Splits Home DH Against EMCC

The Meridian Community College softball returned to Tommy McDonald Field at Highland Park on Tuesday afternoon to take on conference rival East Mississippi Community College in a crucial doubleheader.

The Lady Eagles were able to salvage a split against the Lady Lions by winning Game One 3-2 in dramatic fashion and falling in Game Two by a final of 8-2.

MCC moved its overall record to 13-10 and 8-6 in conference play, while EMCC moved its record to 13-14 and 10-2 in league play. MCC will return to action on Wednesday with a conference road trip at Southwest Mississippi, while the Lady Lions will  play host to Jones on Thursday in Scooba.

MCC was able to scratch for a run in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game One against EMCC on Tuesday to come away with a 3-2 victory.

Mackenzie Harvey drove in the winning run for the Lady Eagles in the bottom of the sixth inning on a double to help pace MCC to the win. Brianna Duquette and Anna Lloyd led MCC at the plate in Game One with two hits apiece, while Mycahla Howard added an RBI double.

Averi Pender led EMCC at the plate in Game One with a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Mallory Vance had a pair of singles.

Tiana Boutte picked up the pitching win in Game One for MCC by tossing a complete game and notching a pair of strikeouts. Carly Thompson suffered the loss out of the bullpen by working two innings for the Lady Lions.

EMCC bounced back in Game Two by scoring five runs in first two innings to run away with an 8-2 victory over MCC. Mallory Vance led EMCC at the plate in Game Two with three hits and Averi Pender added a home run in the victory.

Anna Lloyd led MCC in Game Two with three singles, while Mycahla Howard added a pair of hits and two RBIs.

Ciara Stewart picked up the pitching win in Game Two for EMCC by firing a complete game and notching three strikeouts. Kaylie Delapaz suffered the loss on the mound in Game Two for the Lady Eagles by working only 1 1/3 innings and allowing five runs.

MCC Baseball Falls to ICC

The Meridian Community College baseball team returned to action on Sunday afternoon with a pair of conference games against 10th ranked Itawamba Community College at Scaggs Field. The Eagles didn’t have any answers on Sunday and dropped a pair games to the visiting Indians by final scores of 17-2 and 5-2. MCC dropped its overall record to 13-9 and 2-4 in conference action. MCC will return to the diamond on Tuesday with a road trip to Hinds Community College for another pair of conference games beginning at 3 p.m. MCC will play its next home games on April 1 at Scaggs Field against Southwest Mississippi Community College at 2 p.m.

The day started on a rough note for the Eagles by falling in Game One to the Indians by a final score of 17-2 in nine innings. Itawamba finished the opening game on Sunday with 19 total hits and MCC only managed three hits. Luke Craig led the way at the plate in Game One with an RBI single and former Southeast Lauderdale star Alec Marlow drove in the only other run for the Eagles on a groundout. Freshman Hunter Stanley suffered the pitching loss in Game One by working 3 1/3 innings and allowing six earned runs.

MCC fought hard in Game Two on Sunday against ICC, but lost by a final score of 5-2. Itawamba finished the second game of the doubleheader with seven hits and MCC ended the game with five total hits. Milton Smith led MCC at the plate with a pair of singles and an RBI, while Chase Coker drove in one run on a single. Luke Craig and JD Gann also finished the second game with one single apiece for the Eagles. Freshman Briar Russell took the pitching loss in Game Two for the Eagles by working 3 2/3 innings and allowing only one earned run.

MCC Tennis Sweeps Road Set at ECCC

The Meridian Community College tennis squads took two wins on the road yesterday against rival East Central Community College.  The men and women are now 8-0 in conference play. 

In the men's match, the double's team of Jason Pimenta/Will Swindoll swept Tom Langelaar/Joseph Jabour 8-1.  At two doubles, Breno Goncalves/Callan Shinall took the win over Will Stewart/John Jiminez 8-5, and at three doubles, Noah James/Nathan Hollis took the win over Will Wooten/Brandon Rogers 8-6.  Hollis was subbing in for John Taylor Champion who was at the MS/USA All-Academic Team Awards ceremony in Jackson.  In single's action, Pimenta defeated Langelaar 0,0.  At two singles, Goncalves, who is battling a knee injury, defeated John Jiminez in a long three-set match 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.  Will Swindoll took the win at three singles over Joseph Jabour 2, 0.  Callan Shinall defeated Will Stewart 3, 1 at four singles; Noah James breezed to the victory at five singles 2, 0.  Will Irvin finished out the sweep for Meridian with a win over Graham Murphree with a 6-2, 6-3 win at six singles.

In women's action, Meridian's doubles team of Shelby Zachry/Jordyn Hull defeated Tatiana Quinonez/Emily Dykeman 8-3.  In two double's action, Rachel Sollie/Taylor Miller won a close match 9-8(7) over Chaney Mills/Andi McCrimmon, and Kyra Holway/Micah Gray took the win at three doubles over Hannah Payne/Samantha McCrimmon 8-1.  In women's singles, Shelby Zachry took three sets to come away the victor against Tatiana Quinonez 6-3, 2-6, 10-3.  At two singles, Jordyn Hull defeated Chaney Mills 3, 1.  Kyra Holway breezed through her match against Samantha McCrimon to win 1, 0. Taylor Miller, who is battling a knee injury, defeated Andi McCrimon 1, 1.  At five singles, Rachel Sollie took a 2, 3 win over An Duong.  At six, Micah Gray defeated Emily Dykeman 1, 3.  

Meridian returns to action Friday on the road against Northwest Community College in a 12:00 noon match.  If the weather permits, MCC will play three home matches over the weekend as both teams host Wallace State on Saturday morning beginning at 8:00 a.m. and follow with matches against Holmes at 2:30 p.m. On Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm, the men host Gadsden State out of Alabama.  

MCC Baseball Sweeps Conference Doubleheader at Coahoma

The Meridian Community College baseball returned to the field Wednesday afternoon by taking a long road trip to north Mississippi to battle Coahoma Community College in a crucial conference doubleheader. The Eagles brought plenty of offense with them on the road by sweeping past Coahoma by final scores of 20-7 and 5-2.

MCC improved to 13-7 overall for the season and 2-2 in MACJC play. The Eagles will return to the diamond this Sunday with a conference doubleheader at Scaggs Field against 10th ranked Itawamba Community College. The first pitch of the twin bill is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

MCC used several big innings at the plate in Game One to defeat the Tigers by a final score of 20-7. MCC took a 6-1 lead in the second inning and never looked back in taking the Game One win. Chase Coker finished the game with a grand slam homer, while Blake Fields knocked in a pair of runs on a single and double. Milton Smith and CJ Hughes each had an RBI double, while Garrett Busby had a pair of doubles and one RBI. JD Gann picked up an RBI on a single and Zack Carter also added a pair of RBIs in the Game One victory.

Caleb Yarbrough picked up the pitching victory in Game One by working 7 2/3 innings and collecting six strikeouts.

MCC finished off the sweep of Coahoma in Game Two by a final score of 5-2. JD Gann led the way at the plate in Game Two with an RBI double, while Cade Ewing added and RBI double in the three-run victory over the Tigers.
